The 10U Expos came away from their first tournament of the 2022 season as champions of the CIS Kickoff Classic in Des Moines over the weekend of April 9-10.
The Expos won both Saturday pool play games by run rules, coming away with a 15-6 win over Iowa Sticks SBA Klages (Waukee IA) in four innings and a 17-0 win over Chargers Baseball Club (Chariton IA) in three. In the first game, Kelso Johnson led the offense with two doubles and Chase Kvitek was 2-2 with a double. Liam Sievert struck out seven over the first three innings and Will Kemp struck out two in the final frame. Against the Chargers, Johnson was dominant on the mound, giving up only one hit and striking out nine over the three innings. Liam Sievert blasted his first homerun of the year and Nolan Anderson and Sievert each scored three runs each for the Expos, giving them the #1 overall seed in the 10U division.
Sunday morning found the Expos facing the Chanhassen Storm (MN) in another shortened three-inning game. Sievert was 3-3 with three runs scored and Kvitek was 2-3 with three runs scored. On the mound Anderson and Jax Dolinsek combined to allow only one hit and strike out eight.
In the championship game against MASH (Eagan MN), the Expos jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, only to have the MASH rally to tie the contest at 6-6 later in the game. Kelso Johnson pitched the first four innings striking out seven and also led the offense going 3-3 with a double and triple. After the MASH tied the game in the 5th the Expos exploded for seven runs in the next half inning to take a 13-6 lead. Sievert came on to pitch the final two innings to close it out for the Expos, striking out the final six batters he faced and earning the win in the Kickoff Classic Championship.
Congratulations, Expos! The 10U team will continue their spring season over the weekend of April 23-24, splitting games with Farmington 10U teams in Farmington, Minnesota.
